American Association on Mental Retardation

The American Association on Mental Retardation is a national policy and advocacy organization which provides a variety of resources on mental retardation.  It goals include achieving full societal inclusion and participation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; advocating for equality, individual dignity and other human rights; expanding opportunities for choice and self-determination; and increasing access to quality health, education, vocational, and other human services and supports.

American Congress of Community Supports and Employment Services (ACCSES)

The American Congress of Community Supports and Employment Services (ACCSES) is a national, nonprofit organization of vocational rehabilitation service and community supports.  The organization states that it is committed to maximizing employment opportunities and independent living for individuals with mental and physical disabilities.

ANCOR

ANCOR is a nonprofit trade association representing private providers who provide supports and services to people with disabilities including employment and rehabilitation.  ANCOR’s activities are in the area of public policy analysis, legislative and regulatory initiatives, and judicial actions.

APSE: The Network on Employment - National (APSE)

APSE: The Network on Employment is a membership organization formed in 1988 as the Association for Persons in Supported Employment.  Its goal is to improve and expand integrated employment opportunities, services, and outcomes for persons experiencing disabilities.  They offer trainings and other resources.

Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law

The mission of the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is to protect and advance the rights of adults and children who have mental disabilities. The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is a national legal advocate for people with mental disabilities. Bazelon publishes handbooks, manuals, issues papers and reports explaining key legal and policy issues in everyday terms and highlighting issues related to mental health law in the media.

Boston University Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation

The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation is affiliated with Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Boston University.  The Center is a research, training, and service organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons who have psychiatric disabilities by improving the effectiveness of people, programs, and service systems.

Center for Reintegration

The Center for Reintegration, located in New Jersey, is a non-profit organization committed to helping people with mental illnesses pursue a meaningful life through reintegration-- the process by which a person with a mental illness finds meaningful work, restores his or her relationships, and moves toward independent living. To help achieve these goals, the Center for Reintegration provides information and support tools on employment, therapeutic alliances, and support resources.

Disability Research Institute (DRI)

The Disability Research Institute (DRI) conducts research and evaluation, disseminates information on disability topics, and informs policymakers and the public in understanding policies as they relate to people with disabilities and programs under the Social Security Act.  It is funded through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Social Security Administration, Office of Disability and Income Security Programs, and the College of Applied Life Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). UIUC partners with three affiliate institutions: Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, School of Management and Labor Relations; Northwestern University, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC); and the University of Chicago, National Opinion Research Center (NORC).

Human Services Research Institute (HSRI)

The Human Services Research Institute is located in Cambridge Massachusetts.  Its mission is to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Key areas of focus include the application of performance measures to human services programs; dissemination of best practices and research; technical assistance for the evaluation of system’s change in mental health; and evaluation of managed care for vulnerable populations.

Inter-National Association of Business, Industry and Rehabilitation

The Inter-National Association of Business, Industry and Rehabilitation (I-NABIR) is an association of businesses, rehabilitation service providers, schools and universities, trade unions, and associations who place people with disabilities into employment.  Many members have federal “Projects with Industry” grants.  I-NABIR provides members access to other organizations engaged in similar work as well as training, workshops and conferences.

Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI)

The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) is based at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.  ICI advocates for personal choice, self-determination, and social and economic justice.  Key interest areas include:

*      Employing people with disabilities in community settings;

*      Supporting children and young adults with special health care needs;

*      Accessing general education, and transition from school to adult life;

*      Expanding local recreation and school activities to include people with disabilities;

*      Promoting technology that aids participation in school/community/work activities;

*      Building organizations' ability to serve culturally diverse people with disabilities; and

*      Examining the impact of national and state policies on people with disabilities and their families. 

National Center on Workforce and Disability for Adults

The National Center on Workforce and Disability for Adults provides technical assistance support on a nationwide basis to One-Stop Career Centers, state and local Workforce Investment Boards and other leaders that oversee and operate workforce development systems.  Their goal is to enable these organizations to increase employment outcomes for people with disabilities. The Center is based at the Institute for Community Inclusion, at the University of Massachusetts Boston and funded through the U.S. Department of Labor's (USDOL) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).  Center activities include:

*      Training and technical assistance to the US Department of Labor (USDOL) Regional Offices, State and Local Workforce Office Boards, and One-Stop Career Centers on disability policy and practice issues;

*      Technical assistance to the USDOL Office of Disability and Employment Policy's Customized Employment grantees;

*      Analysis and recommendations to USDOL on a wide range of disability policy issues;

*      The availability of information and expertise through the Center's Information-on-Demand service, accessed electronically or through a toll-free number;

*      Documentation and dissemination of promising practices in One-Stop Career Centers, and on State and Local Workforce Boards that increase employment of people with disabilities;

*      Development of a wide range of materials for workforce development professionals, the disability community, employers, and policymakers, on enhancing employment outcomes for people with disabilities;

*      Establishment of a comprehensive web site ( www.onestops.info ) which contains a variety of materials and information, including a searchable database on topics concerning workforce development issues for people with disabilities; and

*      Creation of greater employer awareness concerning how people with disabilities can form an integral component of the workforce.

National Mental Health Association (NMHA)

The National Mental Health Association (NMHA) is the country's oldest and largest nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness. Their website contains information on effective practices in supported employment for persons with psychiatric disabilities.

National Research and Training Center (NRTC) on Psychiatric Disability

National Research and Training Center (NRTC) on Psychiatric Disability is located in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).  The Center promotes access to effective consumer-driven and community-based services for adults with serious mental illness. It is currently engaged in a project called Advancing Customized Employment (ACE): Building Careers for People with Disabilities via One-Stop Centers.  The project is a collaboration of the Chicago Workforce Board, Chicago One-Stop Centers, Thresholds, Inc., and the Center on Mental Health Services Research & Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). 

New Hampshire-Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center

The New Hampshire-Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center is a mental health services research group that conducts research in the areas of implementation of evidence-based practices, supported employment and vocational rehabilitation, and trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. 

Technical Assistance Collaborative (TAC)

The Technical Assistance Collaborative (TAC) is a national non-profit organization that works to achieve positive outcomes on behalf of people with disabilities, people who are homeless, and people with other special needs by providing state-of-the-art information, capacity building, and technical expertise to organizations and policymakers in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, human services, and affordable housing.

Training and Technical Assistance for Providers (T-TAP)

Training and Technical Assistance for Providers (T-TAP) is a technical assistance center run by Virginia Commonwealth University in partnership with the Institute for Community Inclusion.  The center is funded under a cooperative agreement from The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy. The Center’s goal is to increase the capacity of community rehabilitation programs and others that currently operate segregated work and non-work programs for people with disabilities in the "Special Minimum Wage" program established under section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA, 29 U.S.C. 214(c)).  The desired outcome of this training and technical assistance is to:

*      Evolve their programs to provide integrated employment outcomes (i.e., non section 14(c) employment) in non-stereotypical jobs based on customized employment strategies and individual choice; and

*      Increase wages of people with disabilities who are currently working at less than minimum wage through the use of customized employment strategies and individual choice.

 

US Department of Health and Human Services - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA)

SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center (CMHS) is a one-stop, national clearinghouse for free information about mental health, including publications, references, and referrals to local and national resources and organizations.  The Center also has information on Federal grants, conferences, and other events.

United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association - USPRA

The United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association - USPRA (formerly the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services - IAPSRS) is an association of psychiatric rehabilitation agencies, individual practitioners, persons in recovery, researchers, educators, funders, mental health administrators and other interested people dedicated to promoting, supporting, and strengthening community-oriented rehabilitation services and resources for persons with psychiatric disabilities. Access to numerous publications on psychiatric rehabilitation is also available at this site.

University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD)

University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) facilitate the flow of disability-related information between community and university.  They have been in existence since 1963.  Currently there are sixty-one Centers located in a university setting in every state and territory.  Centers work with people with disabilities, members of their families, state and local government agencies and community providers in projects that provide training, technical assistance, service, research and information sharing.  Centers work on issues such as early intervention, health care, community-based services, inclusive and meaningful education, transition from school to work, employment, housing, assistive technology and transportation.  Centers in New York State are:

*      Rose F. Kennedy University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service - Albert Einstein College of Medicine;

*      Westchester Institute for Human Development, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities in affiliation with New York Medical College;

*      Westchester Institute for Human Development, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Center on Disability and Health - School of Public Health, New York Medical College; and

*      Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, University of Rochester - Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong.

University of Illinois: Center on Mental Health Research and Policy

The University of Illinois/Chicago Department of Psychiatry Center on Mental Health Research and Policy operates the Employment Intervention Demonstration Program (EIDP).  The EIDP is a multisite research study of innovative programs that combine vocational rehabilitation with clinical services and supports. The study was designed to determine new ways of enhancing employment opportunities and quality of life for mental health consumers.  Funded by The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the program includes eight demonstration sites as well as a Coordinating Center. The EIDP Coordinating Center, charged with overall program administration, data management, and data analyses, is located at the Center for Mental Health Services Research and Policy in the Department of Psychiatry.  The project is run in collaboration with the Human Services Research Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 

University of Iowa: Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center

The Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center is focused on improving the quality of life for persons living with disabilities. The Center is based at the University of Iowa College of Law and has offices in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere.  It concentrates on public policy and its impact on persons with disabilities, with an emphasis on employment, self-determination and self-sufficiency.

University of Michigan: the Supported Education Community Action Group (SECAG)

The University of Michigan Supported Education Community Action Group (SECAG) within the School of Social Work (SECAG) began as the Supported Education Community Action GRANT.  Its goal is to assist in the development and implementation of successful, replicable, fully-functioning Supported Education programs by providing a comprehensive online resource bank for individuals, agencies, and organizations seeking to plan and implement such programs.

The online resource bank includes step-by-step guides to the program planning and implementation processes, a supported education curriculum, Power Point presentations, a comprehensive supported education bibliography, and links to directories on mental health service providers and supported education programs around the country. 

University of Wisconsin Stout: Vocational Rehabilitation Institute

The Stout Vocational Rehabilitation Institute conducts research and development, delivers services, provides training and education, and disseminates information in order to find answers, provide solutions, and impact futures for persons with disabilities, students, practitioners, business and industry, other customers, and the community.

Virginia Commonwealth University: Worksupport.com

The purpose of the Virginia Commonwealth University Research and Training Center on Workplace Supports and Job Retention (RRTI) is to study those supports that are most effective for assisting individuals with disabilities to maintain employment and advance their careers.  This portal is funded in part by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), U.S. Department of Education.
