Job Readiness and Support Program

Sponsored by New York State Rehabilitation and Research Training Institute (RRTI) and the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA)


Job Readiness and Support Program
  • A six-week program for TANF recipients and others who will receive guidance in overcoming barriers to achieving and maintaining employment
  • Emphasis on building confidence and independence
  • Conducted by qualified instructors using the Job Readiness and Support Curriculum that contains modules on Socialization Skills, Daily Living Skills, and Job Readiness and Retention
  • Instructors selected by OTDA - 10 classes statewide
  • Four 3-hour classes a week, with a fifth day dedicated to job counseling, interviews, consultation with local agencies, and follow up activities
  • Sample topics:
     - Conflict Management
     - Conflict Management
     - Friendships
     - Stress Management and Balancing Work and Family
     - Healthy Living and Shopping
     - Math for Employment and Daily Living
     - Self-Esteem
     - Domestic Abuse
     - Job Applications and Interviews
     - Professional Behavior at Work
     - First Days on the Job
     - Job Retention and Survival After Class
  • Flexible instruction, tailored to the needs of the class participants
  • Guest speakers and field trips tied to the curriculum content
  • The origin of the Job Readiness and Support program is EMPOWER (Empathetic Mentoring Puts Opportunity Within Everyone's Reach), a job readiness and retention program developed by the Independent Living Center in Massena, New York.
Program Goal: Self-reliance and independence.
