Nurse Training

FREE Nurse Training Program Registration

The Rehabilitation Research and Training Institute (RRTI) has received funding from the federal Health and Human Services agency to present 5 professional development programs for nurses, starting in January 2010. The courses will focus on pharmacology and telemedicine for individuals with developmental disabilities.

All of the trainings will be offered statewide via videoconferences held at over 15 OMRDD Developmental Disabilities Service Offices (DDSOs) at no cost to nurse participants. The half-day programs will be presented by experts in the most up-to-date information on pharmacology,

telemedicine, and DD.

Nurses will receive contact hours from the New York State Nurses Association.

Course #1 (A&B)

Nurse Training Program: Practical Considerations Related to Pharmacology and Developmental Disabilities
Course #1 is a two-part course. Nurses must complete 1A and 1B to receive NYSNA contact hours. Designed for nurses who are involved in assessing the medical status of individuals with developmental disabilities, this course will cover practical information related to intake and assessment; communication with consumers, patients and caregivers; explanations for behavior changes; and pharmacology options (including strategies for administering and monitoring medications).

At the conclusion of the videoconference, training participants will have the option of completing the second part of the course either in the videoconference classroom or on-line at their own facilities. A 30-minute video on Transfer of Knowledge will be shown, demonstrating realistic strategies for sharing information from the Nurse Training Program with co-workers and supervisors. The video will consist of 2 short modules followed by review questions. Nurses who opt to view the video on-line will have until May 2010. Note: NYSNA CEU contact hours will not be granted unless both parts (1A and 1B) have been completed.

Course #2

Nurse Training Program: Pharmacology and Developmental Disabilities - Pharmacology Update
This course will review the pharmacokinetic parameters of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination as they apply to the DD population, with an emphasis on metabolism. Drug interactions and agents that are classified as inducers or inhibitors will be highlighted. Information about psychoactive medications and drug interactions will also be included. A Case Study approach will be used to link the information to nurse practice.

Course #3

Nurse Training Program: Pharmacology and Developmental Disabilities - Categories of Medications
This course will focus on categories of pharmacology that significantly impact the DD population. Topics will include medication interactions, side effects and common reactions; seizure/epilepsy management, bone health, and diabetic management. Emphasis will be on nurse strategies for assessment, including for dual diagnosis (DD and mental health). A Case Study approach on topics such as Medication Reconciliation will be used to connect the content to nurse practice.

Course #5

Nurse Training Program: Pharmacology and Developmental Disabilities - Using Telemedicine
This course for nurses will include an overview of the use of technology in healthcare as well as nursing informatics (combining clinical information and record-keeping with technology). Topics will include remote patient monitoring as an enabler for personalized healthcare and state-of-the-art telemedicine and the future of telehealth. Examples of telemedicine and telepsychiatry with individuals with developmental disabilities will be provided. Course #6

Nurse Training Program: Case Studies in Polypharmacology and Developmental Disabilities
True-to-life case studies will be discussed, with specific suggestions for assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental disabilities. Case studies will be based on current issues and concerns, with special attention to the role of nursing and pharmacology. Topics will include managing multiple medications, behavioral manifestations of medications, involving caregivers in medication management, and assisting patients in planning for changes in routines.

NOTE: Nurses who plan on attending this session are invited to submit brief case studies to jessica@nyrehab.org with the subject heading: CASE STUDY. Dr. Trigoboff will respond to the submitted case studies during the June 15th presentation.

(Please do not use real names or locations in the case studies.)
